Pregnancy Spotting

What is Pregnancy Spotting?

Recent surveys show there's about twenty percent of women suffering from vaginal and pregnancy spotting. Vaginal or pregnancy spotting is known as a normal condition for most pregnant women in which a red, pinkish and dark colored blood comes out through their vagina. Most of the time, women experience spotting during their first trimester of pregnancy (7-9 weeks).

However, this condition can be also harmful if the bleeding doesn't stop ten days after the conception and is accompanied by abdominal cramps, fever and chills.

Causes of Pregnancy Spotting

Pregnancy spotting occurs when there is an increase supply of blood in the cervix and pelvic areas. There are various possible causes of pregnancy spotting and the most common are: STD infections, cervical polyps (there's a growth extension in cervix or cervical anal), frequent and promiscuous sexual encounters, ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy occurred in the fallopian tube instead inside the uterus) and sometimes, pap smears test can also yield excessive bleeding.

Treatment for Pregnancy Spotting

Once you discovered light or hard spotting, you need to call your doctor immediately. Never self-medicate yourself and learn to stay calm as always.

If the bleeding is not at its worst case scenario, your doctor will simply recommend you to avoid sexual contacts for a certain period of time and you are required to undisturbed bed rest. Letting someone do the basic work for you is absolutely helpful.

When To Call Help

Pregnancy spotting might be a normal condition but in several cases, this can be an alarming case especially if you are having heavy bleeding during the final stages of your pregnancy. If spotting occurs after 37th week of your pregnancy, the condition is considered normal as this is the indication of giving birth.

In other cases, spotting can also be a sign of pregnancy complications such as placental abruption (placenta is separated from the uterus) and placenta previa (the attachment of placenta into the lower part of the uterus). If worse comes to worst, vaginal spotting leads to miscarriage. For this reason, it's better to immediately contact your doctor or head directly to the nearest hospital near you.

Like what several experts say, mild spotting is not something you should be worrying about but if bleeding seems cumbersome, you feel dizzy most of the time and you think you need to use a sanitary pad just to ease the bleeding, the time has required you to do something.
